Oh, you are right. Thank you for clarification. This is a mistake in the tutorial. The correct way is as you described by using the AR.ModelAnimation (reference:
http://www.wikitude.com/external/doc/documentation/latest/Reference/JavaScript%20Reference/classes/ModelAnimation.html
). We are going to correct this here asap.

Are you sure? The other page describes using "AR.ModelAnimation", while here "AR.Model.play" is used, which does not work in my tests and is NOT in the Javascript API.

Yes, this is still up to date. This is a blogpost and a tutorial about how to use 3d models and animation groups. The section "Working with 3d animations" describes the same but not in such a detailed way:
